This one-day course teaches the fundamentals of training from the ground up. You will learn how different styles of training work on different individuals and how to effectively use these tools to optimally and safely train your clients and athletes. Topics covered will include physiology and the training effect, coaching in the weight room, workout programming, and long term programming for specific goals. Attendees will receive two training manuals, one geared toward training youth, in advance of the course.

About the Instructors:

Sara Fleming, MS, CFT is a certified fitness trainer and weightlifting coach with a master’s degree in biochemistry and molecular biology from Georgetown University. Sara is certified by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA) as a Fitness Trainer, Youth Fitness Trainer, and Specialist in Fitness Nutrition. Sara is also certified as a coach with both USA Weightlifting and USA Track and Field and has coached numerous athletes at the national and world level in weightlifting and powerlifting. She has also served as an assistant coach and strength coach for the Carolina Elite youth track and field club and designed and taught a strength and fitness class for third and fourth graders at Baileywick Elementary School, both in Raleigh, NC.

Prior to her training career, Sara worked as a medical researcher for ten years in both the university and private sector and has co-authored a number of scientific articles and grant applications. Sara has authored a certification course for the ISSA, Specialist in Group Fitness, which she is currently teaching for the ISSA’s online college. Sara has also authored a number of articles and educational materials on fitness training and performance nutrition for the ISSA blog, on-line publications, and her own professional websites and seminars for coaches and athletes.

As a proponent of trainer education, Sara has mentored and taught a number of trainers, coaches, and athletes, both personally and clinics and seminars. In her private practice, Sara currently trains a broad range of individuals in both personal and group settings including children, adults, senior citizens, and athletes of all ages and sports. Sara is herself an athlete and in addition to pursuing well rounded fitness for herself and her family, enjoys competing in powerlifting and highland games.

David Van Skike is the assistance strength coach at Seattle Strength and Power. A USPA world champion masters lifter, David is a former pro mountain bike racer and accomplished athlete in velodrome/road racing. He coaches USAPL national and world champions. Together with Sara Fleming, David is the co-author of Play the Ball as it Lies: The Art and Science of Teaching Strength.
